Furniture made from recycled materials is a growing practice among sustainable designers, but Danish brand Mater is using industrial waste to create functional, beautiful pieces. And you can see them for yourself this month during Melbourne Design Week!

The innovative company have teamed up with Australian stockist Cult Design to showcase their revolutionary circular collection in a new exhibition, Waste Dream, that will take over a garage space adjoining Cult’s Melbourne showroom.

Since the brand launched in 2006, Mater’s mission has been all about developing more sustainable production methods and now their patented technology is turning everything from coffee bean shells to sawdust and fishing nets into furniture!

Visitors will have the chance to get up close and personal with the products from the Conscious Collection — a series of furniture by famous designers Børge Mogensen, Space Copenhagen, Eva Harlou and Nanna Ditzel. All the pieces are made with Matek, which features up-cycled fibrous waste and different kinds of plastic in a unique composite material with a texture similar to stone or marble. The best part is the material is designed to be reprocessed again and again.

Cult founder and CEO Richard Munao says the showcase is perfectly aligned with Melbourne Design Week’s theme of ‘design the world you want’.

‘I am really proud to shine a spotlight on the important work Mater has achieved over the last decade with their Conscious Collection and Matek technology. They have truly set a leading example for what sustainability can look like in the furniture industry.’

Don’t miss the chance to learn more how waste can become new materials for the furniture industry with one of the exclusive guided tours led by Ole Bjerg from Mater.
