Bridgford House at 242 Beach Road, Black Rock was designed by modernist architect Robin Boyd and completed in 1954.

Bridgford House was Boyd’s largest commission at the time, and the beauty of its mid-century architecture has been lovingly maintained for decades.
Occupying the majority of a corner site opposite Half Moon Bay, the house comprises a low-lying rectangular brick structure with a low-pitched roof form spanning almost the full width of the site.
Louvred pergolas to the north shade a courtyard running the full boundary. This outdoor space is framed indoors through expansive full-height glazing, creating the impression that the living spaces and garden are ‘virtually one.’
Materials are warm and robust, including pale orange double brick walls, timber-framed windows and lined ceilings, and steel.
Mid-century architecture enthusiasts were worried this house would be demolished when it last sold in 2018, but it was fortunately purchased by those dedicated to preserving its modern history.
