Phooey Architects were engaged to renovate the property, adding a new extension and modern luxuries. ‘We were inspired to make the house more liveable and sustainable by adding solar panels and hydronic underfloor heating,’ say the owners.
The architects were inspired by the surrealist idea of ‘cubomania’ – the art of making collages by cutting an image into squares and rearranging them into a new image. This approach is evident in the extension’s external brickwork, where alternating vertical and horizontal stretcher bond segments step in and out, emphasised by the strategic use of salvaged slate roof tiles.
The interiors meanwhile feature several recycled features from the home’s previous additions, including salvaged bricks, repurposed staircase treads and balustrades, and a light well made of the original windows.
Nods to the home’s former ‘60s additions are evident in the timber joinery throughout, while period fireplaces, skirtings, architraves, hessian-clad walls, and detailed archways have all been restored.
The completed home contains four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a study, additional guest/rumpus room, and multiple living areas. The location is just the cherry on top!
‘A favourite spot of ours is to sit on the original balcony attached to the main bedroom and look over Edinburgh Gardens on a sunny afternoon with a drink in hand,’ say the vendors.
